Window Film FAQ's

Can window film be installed on factory tinted glass?

Factory tinted glass is made by actually placing a dye in the glass. It does nothing but change the glass color in order to offer a certain level of privacy. Sometimes it is even called "privacy glass". Factory-tinted glass has limited heat rejection and in most cases has virtually no UVA or UVB reduction. Window film rejects up to 99% of UV radiation, not to mention its superior heat rejection and fade reducing properties. The installation of window film even on "factory tinted" glass is the only way to ensure the maximum protection for the occupants and contents of any vehicle.

Why do some tints turn purple?

Film that turns purple, peels off, or starts bubbling is usually an economy or low-grade window film that has often been installed incorrectly. Over time, the adhesives and dyes in a low quality film will begin to break down. We use films that are are engineered with high quality fade resistant dyes and metallic layers that will not discolour.

Is window film expensive?

The average installation costs less than most other window treatments. Actually, your investment in window film will return dividends in the form of reduced air conditioning and heating costs, and protection against costly fading and replacement of soft furnishings.

Why do commerical buildings often have window film?

 Improved tenant comfort - Lower heating and cooling operating costs - Improved aesthetics - Uniform appearance - Improved safety and security - Extended air conditioning equipment life - Valued alternative to adding more air conditioning equipment and more. Most often, commercial customers will purchase window films for tenant comfort and justify the purchase on energy cost savings.

Is all window film the same?

Window Film can be placed into 3 general categories;

Cheap - Non-reflective or dyed films that primarily absorb solar energy. Intermediate - Reflective/Metallic films absorb as well as reflect solar energy. Premium - Nano/ceramic films which use high-tech compounds to provide the highest performance. These differ in price, and durability so get in touch to discuss what will be the best film for your situation.

Does the film go on the inside or outside?

Window film is always applied to the inside of the glass. The outside of the window is used to cut-out the pattern on automotive installs. In vary rare occasions, a film could be installed on the outside of a hard to reach sky light or roof..

Is automotive, residential, & commerical window film the same?

No. The glass used in a vehicle is not the same as glass used on a property. There are major differences in how automotive and flat glass films are constructed. Automotive films are meant to absorb energy, that is why the windows get very hot and become heat radiators when a car is parked. As the vehicle drives down the road heat is pulled from the glass through a process known as convection. Buildings on the other hand are stationary and using automotive film could make the glass absorb too much heat, leading to thermal fractures and breakage. Flat glass films purge heat by reflecting energy preventing the energy/heat from being absorbed and actively reducing it. New Zealand automotive regulations do not allow for coloured or reflective tint that is often seen on flat glass applications.

Will window film affect my plants?

Medium and light density films may slow the growth of common household plants for the first several weeks while the plant adjusts to the presence of the film. Following the films application, plants usually require less watering and this may result in a healthier plant overall. Most plants will thrive, with window film, because they won’t “burn” on sunny days and window film will block much of the sun’s infrared heat and UV rays that cause plant fading.
